The economy minister said on Tuesday that it is possible to revive the Portuguese economy and “change the rules of the game in a few years” by treating the private sector, which is the engine of growth, well.
“We can compete with the best because today we operate online. It is possible to restart the economic growth of the Portuguese economy and it is possible to change the rules of the game in a few years,” said Pedro Reis at the conference “100 years of BIAL – shaping the future” at the Serralves Foundation in Porto.
To achieve this, he added, the private sector, which is the engine of economic growth, must be treated well.
In his opinion, talking about the Portuguese economy and its growth means talking about foreign investment.
The government official insisted that Portugal needed capital and therefore foreign investment was welcome.
“Let us be humble and recognize that we need and welcome foreign investment and that economic growth comes through the private sector,” he stressed.
Capital is “looking very closely at Portugal,” and that’s good, he emphasized.
The Economy Minister realized that “there is no need to complicate the economic growth equation” and that Portugal needs more internationalization, more innovation, more talent attraction, more foreign investment and more capital.
And he added: “And with that comes greater scale, and with scale comes corporate success, and with corporate success comes balanced and sustainable growth, and thus we build a balanced country.”
That is why the government strives to “leave no one or anything behind,” and this includes, for example, more business-friendly taxation or the creation of strategic infrastructure, he said.
Stating that the state and government cannot fail companies, the minister said that the Ministry of Economy is the ministry of companies.
“I see myself in many ways as a ministry of companies, where we have to work in an ecosystem and in close coordination with other ministries, because everything will give to the economy, and the economy in everything is action-oriented, execution-oriented, with meaning. urgently, with a reformist spirit and at the same time with the courage to take risks,” he said.
Portugal is one of them, so the strategy must be clear, firm and objective, he said.
