Speaking to reporters in parliament, the bloc MP said the country would neither lose nor benefit from “the presence of Portuguese representatives in European institutions in leadership positions” and that the “policy” of the chosen name should be assessed in this appointment.
Marisa Matias recalled the name of Durão Barroso, former President of the European Commission, saying that “António Costa is not Durao Barroso” and therefore “there will be a different political profile here.”
And he added: “It is politics that matters, and therefore, at this moment in which we live, this is a moment dedicated to defense, which must be an uncompromising defense of human rights, democratic values, the rule of law.” ,Concluding this agreement (…) seems difficult to us.”
Marisa Mathias also criticized the preliminary agreement on Europe’s top jobs, saying it did not have “any barriers to the far right” and said Europe was heading down a dangerous path.
