The Chegi leader said this Wednesday that there are PSD leaders who would “blush with shame” because of the Prime Minister’s support for António Costa’s candidacy for the presidency of the European Council, while Luís Montenegro recognizes the qualities of the former head of the socialist government.
During the two-week debate in the Assembly of the Republic, André Ventura responded to the Prime Minister’s reference to his activity in the PSD before the formation of Chegi, when he mentioned that in the past he had waved the Social Democratic flag behind him.
“It was not just behind you, it was after another prime minister who would blush with shame for his support for António Costa these days,” he said, referring to former prime minister Pedro Passos Coelho.
President Chegi added that there are “others who, if they looked at the SDP leader today” and heard him say that the former Socialist prime minister “has remarkable qualities in government and governance, they would blush with shame.”
“History will record that liberals, socialists and social democrats united to support António Costa when they wanted to overthrow him here,” he said.
In his response, the Prime Minister emphasized that he opposed António Costa’s government “from the first day to the last”, first as parliamentary leader of the PSD between 2015 and 2017, and more recently as PSD president.
“This means that I cannot recognize his characteristics as a politician, that I cannot recognize his ability to fulfill the role of reconciliation, of uniting different political families,” he asked.
Luis Montenegro also told Andre Ventura that as long as “he is not able to understand this, he does not understand anything and will not achieve the goal he wants in his political journey.”
