Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said this Wednesday that António Costa is the “best socialist” to preside over the European Council, not because he is Portuguese, but because of his characteristics.
“I believe that António Costa is truly the best socialist of those capable of becoming a candidate for the presidency of the European Council and fulfilling this specific role. And it is not only because he is Portuguese, but because of his own characteristics,” the first emphasized – Minister Luis Montenegro.
At the start of a two-week debate in the Assembly of the Republic, PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos welcomed the “more than likely election of António Costa as President of the European Council” and, in the face of protests from the Chegi benches. This is about directly thanking Luis Montenegro for supporting the Portuguese government in this choice.
Underlining the importance of this moment for Europe, the PS leader emphasized the “political weight” of António Costa and noted that this would be a “proud moment” for Portugal and the PS.
