BE wants four-day working week pilot project coordinators in parliament

BE would like to hear from the coordinators of the pilot project for a four-day working week in the Assembly of the Republic so that they can present the results of this type of work.

In a request sent this Thursday and addressed to the chairman of the parliamentary committee on labour, social security and inclusion, socialist Eurico Brillante Díaz, the blockers recall that the final report of the pilot project was sent to parliament this week, considering that “the Commission must welcome and advance this debate, deepening its conclusions and discussing future paths.”

The Bloc College recalls that the previous government launched a pilot project of a four-day working week “in the private sector” at the end of 2022, which took place in the second half of 2023 and was coordinated by Professor Pedro Gomes of Economics at the University of London and Rita Fontinha, Professor of Strategic Human Resource Management at the University of Reading.

An interim report on the project was published at the end of 2023, covering 41 companies and more than a thousand employees.

“In a survey of 200 workers, they reported a reduction in negative mental health symptoms, anxiety, insomnia or sleep problems, reduced levels of work fatigue (-19%) and better balance between work and work. and family (65% of workers spent more time with family after the start of the reduced working hours in the app referenced in this report).

This Wednesday, during a two-week debate in Parliament, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro did not rule out the possibility of extending the four-day working week for public administration, emphasizing that this could be a way of evaluating civil servants.

This is a type of work in which there is a reduction in working hours per week without a reduction in wages and which has been put into practice in the last few months in Portugal by 41 companies experimenting with a four-day week in Portugal. (of which 21 companies will coordinate the start of testing as part of a pilot project in June 2023).
