The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, mourned the death of Manuel Fernandes this Thursday, recalling the brilliant career of the former Portugal international, a “great striker”.
“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Manuel Fernandes, an outstanding player, a simple and good man, a great captain and a great authority for Sporting Portugal,” said the chief director of the FPF.
Fernando Gomes recalled his career as a forward with CUF, Sporting and Vitoria de Setubal, as well as his appearances for the AA, B and U21 teams.
“He was an inspiration to players for generations and will forever remain one of the greatest figures in our football,” he added.
Former footballer and coach Manuel Fernandes died this Thursday at the age of 73 after a long illness, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced today on its official website.
Manuel Fernandes, born in Sarrillos Pequenos, in Moite, on June 5, 1951, became famous as a player, above all playing for Sporting, which he represented between 1975/76 and 1986/87, and also playing for Sarilense, CUF and Victory of Setúbal.
The player, who scored a poker in Sporting’s 7-1 defeat to Benfica in the 1986/87 season, played 30 games for the main team and scored seven goals.
