The conversations began being intercepted as part of Operation Influencer in 2020 and have since passed through the hands of 16 judges. The wiretaps include names such as António Costa, Pedro Nuno Santos, former ministers João Galamba and Duarte Cordeiro, and other political figures.
Visão magazine reports that the investigation was carried out during the Covid-19 period and that the wiretapping was confirmed in the first instance by 12 investigating judges, including current and replacement judges.
Three other Supreme Court judges also upheld the prosecutor’s appeal and decided to continue wiretapping the then prime minister. There was another justice of the peace who did not order the destruction of the recordings of phone conversations involving non-suspects, which led to the MP’s appeal to the Constitutional Court. The prosecutors won.
