Prime Minister Luis Montenegro this Friday called former footballer Manuel Fernandes, who died on Thursday, “an outstanding athlete,” emphasizing his fair play and humanity.
“Manuel Fernandes was a great sportsman and sports lover. Personally, he always impressed me with his fair play and human dimension,” wrote Luis Montenegro on the social network X.
Former footballer and coach Manuel Fernandez died on Thursday at the age of 73 after a long illness.
Manuel Fernandez, born on June 5, 1951 in Sarillos Pequenos, in Moita, became famous as a player, primarily with Sporting between 1975/76 and 1986/87, and also played for Sarilense, CUF and “Vitoria de Setubal”.
The player, who scored a poker in Sporting’s 7-1 defeat to Benfica in the 1986/87 season, played 30 games for the main team and scored seven goals.
After finishing his playing career, Manuel Fernandes remained involved with football as a coach, managing Vitoria de Setúbal, Estrela da Amadora, Ovarense, Sporting, Campomaiorense, Tirsense, Santa Clara, Penafiel and União de Leiria, and in between coaching in Angola, at ASA.
