Left-back Luke Shaw is an enigma in England

Despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Euros, England have not been immune to controversy.

Firstly, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer disputed a few minutes of usage. More recently, Brentford’s Ivan Toney admitted to arguing with manager Gareth Southgate over his late appearance against Slovakia.

The focus now is on Luke Shaw, the only original left-back called up for the European Championship who has not played since February. The manager passed over Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell and Crystal Palace’s Tyreek Mitchell in favour of the Manchester United man, prompting much criticism from English fans.

Shaw has been training seemingly without restrictions, but Southgate has opted to deploy Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier on the left flank.

Watching the last game, the coach said that the left-hander is not yet ready to start. Something that should also not happen this Saturday against Switzerland in Dusseldorf, in the knockout match. We can only wait and see if the English team advances in the competition, so that perhaps in the semi-finals Luke Shaw can officially return to the field, five months after his last match, and right in the decisive phase of the tournament. European Championship.
