Search continues for missing fishermen in San Pedro de Moel

The search for three missing people on a ship that docked at Marinha Grande on Wednesday continues for the third day in a row this Friday, according to the Nazaré port captain.

Speaking to Lusa, João Severino Lourenço said that searches are ongoing with the participation of an ocean patrol vessel and Amarok vehicles from the Seawak project and the maritime police.

“During the course of today, at the request of the ship owner, technical diving operations will also be carried out by a private company in order to determine a plan for refloating and subsequently removing the vessel,” he said.

According to the Nazaré port captain, technical dives will be supervised by the maritime police, although it is not known what time they will begin.

The search for the three fishermen was carried out at night by forces of the Setubal NRP, the Portuguese Navy and units of the local command of the Nazaré maritime police as part of a routine patrol.

The search operations were coordinated by the Port Master and the local commander of the Nazaré Marine Police, the Setubal and Cassiopeia Marine Police Rescue Units of the Portuguese Navy, the Marine Police Forensic Group and the Sapadora Diving Unit No. 2 of the Portuguese Navy and the vessels of the Nazaré, Figueira da Foz and Peniche rescue stations.

On land were elements of the SeaWatch project of the National Maritime Authority, supported by two vehicles, a unit of the Local Command of the Marine Police of Nazaré and an aerial surveillance group of the Local Command of the Marine Police of Nazaré, supported by two drones.

Two Portuguese Air Force aircraft were also involved.

According to the ANM, the Marine Police Psychological Department continues to provide support to the families of the victims.

The warning to list the fishing vessel Virgem Dolorosa was transmitted on Wednesday at 04:33 to the local command of the Nazaré Marine Police.

Three crew members died, 11 were rescued and three were missing in Praia da Leirosa, Figueira da Foz.
