According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), seven areas of the continent are under yellow warning this Friday due to the forecast of hot weather, and in several municipalities the risk of rural fires is very high.
The areas of Évora, Beja, Portalegre, Setúbal, Castelo Branco, Guarda and Bragança will be under yellow warning until 6pm this Friday due to persistent high maximum temperatures.
A yellow warning, the least serious of the three, is issued by IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
Due to hot weather, the municipalities of São Bras de Alportel and Tavira in the Faro district are at maximum risk of rural fires this Friday.
More than 50 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Vila Real, Viseu and Beja are also at very high risk of fire this Friday.
On Saturday, eight municipalities in the Faro district, two in Portalegre and six in Bragança will be at maximum risk of rural fires.
IPMA estimates that fire danger will remain in some areas until at least Tuesday.
This risk, defined by IPMA, has five levels, from low to maximum. The calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation over the past 24 hours.
IPMA forecasts partly cloudy to clear skies across the continent this Friday, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible in the north and central parts of the country in the afternoon, and light to moderate winds, strong at high altitudes.
A decrease in maximum temperatures is also expected, except in the northeast of Tras-os-Montes and Beira Alta.
Minimum temperatures will range from 16 degrees Celsius (in Porto, Guarda, Coimbra and Leiria) to 22 (in Faro), while maximum temperatures will range from 24 (in Aveiro) to 39 (in Evora).
