Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro congratulated Keir Starmer on Friday on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and pledged Portugal’s commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.
Labour’s Keir Starmer won Thursday’s UK election with a landslide majority, returning the Labour Party to power after 14 years in opposition.
“I congratulate Keir Starmer on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. You can count on Portugal’s commitment to strengthening the deep and dynamic ties between our countries and building the strongest union in the world in the future,” Montenegro wrote in a post on the X social network in Portuguese and English.
Keir Starmer had already been appointed prime minister and, after an audience between the two, King Charles III instructed him to form a government.
