The Prime Minister considered the performance of the national football team at the European Championship to be a source of pride for the country and an example for the Portuguese.
“We were unlucky not to get past the last hurdle, the penalty shootout. But we played a great game, had a great campaign and there is no doubt that all the players, the coach and the federation management are a source of pride for all of us,” said Luis Montenegro.
Speaking to journalists in Castelo de Paiva, Aveiro district, where he visited the Vinho Verde fair, the head of government added regarding the football team: “[O desempenho no europeu] It was also a way to inspire the country to be among the best and know how to position itself among the best.”
The team was knocked out of the tournament on Friday in the quarter-finals on penalties by France after a goalless draw in regular and extra time.
