Tunisian journalists’ union has condemned the “punitive policy” of a court that sentenced lawyer and columnist Sonia Dahmani to one year in prison for claiming that racist practices still exist in the country.
The Tunisian National Union of Journalists (SNJT) warned that Dahmani’s sentence was “a continuation of the dangerous deviation that has been observed over the past year in the judicial handling of press freedom cases,” according to a statement published Saturday by state news station TAP.
“This creates a tense public atmosphere that perpetuates a one-sided discourse that undermines the rules of pluralism and media independence and violates constitutional principles that enshrine rights and freedoms,” he warned.
