This Sunday, the SDP chairman found it immoral for active workers to earn less than the unemployed and reiterated his criticism of the changes made by the Decent Work Agenda.
Speaking at the closing of the XV National Congress of Social Democrat Workers in Lisbon, Luis Montenegro defended that “a society in which people who work live until the end of the month and earn less than people who do not work is immoral.”
“While we don’t want to leave anyone behind, the worst thing we can do is discourage those who produce, those who work, those who have the opportunity, those who make the effort and who reach the end of the month and have less income than those who do not make an effort,” defended the social democratic leader.
For Montenegro, “a just and solidary society leaves no one behind, it must have help for those who have more difficulties, it must have help that, above all, can motivate them to overcome difficulties, to get out of a situation of vulnerability.” .
Just before this, Luis Montenegro cited teachers as an example and mentioned that being placed away from home “means that many of these professionals, in addition to spending on transport, accommodation and food, live to the end of the month and earn zero or even have a negative balance. “.
In his speech, the social democratic leader once again criticized the Decent Work Agenda approved in Parliament on Friday, voted for by the PS, abstained by the SDP, Chega, PAN and Livre, and opposed by the BE, PCP and IL.
Montenegro believes that this is “a process worthy of courtesy or ease on the part of the Portuguese government and PS”.
“I am sincerely concerned that since the signing of the income agreement based on social consultation, some of its main provisions are now being distorted or falsified in this legislation, often to the detriment of workers,” he criticized.
The SDP President considered that “this Decent Work Agenda deserves to be studied in terms of the detrimental effects it will unfortunately have on workers’ rights.”
In his speech, Luis Montenegro also noted that “the time has come to determine who has the courage to look into the future, predict the future, and prepare those who will come next.”
“Not the time of skills, not the time of tricks, not the time of political agreements, not the time of survivors, not the time of those who only want to get to tomorrow, the time of reformers. , those who design, those who really support,” he stressed.
