Former Liberal leader Cotrim Figueiredo warned on Sunday that the IL had failed to secure votes at this weekend’s congress, arguing that the party needed to change the way it “makes and communicates politics”.
“We have given several examples in these days of how we sometimes close ourselves in our own heads. It is as if the liberal gets into the neck and does not move on to the rest of the body. This is a kind of rationalism. I would call it hyper-rationalism, which greatly limits political action,” said the newly elected MEP in a speech concluding the morning work on the last day of the IL’s VIII National Congress in Santa Maria da Feira.
According to João Cotrim Figueiredo, “despite the media coverage” of the main meeting over the course of two days, “this hyper-rationalism makes us believe” that the party did not get “a single vote this weekend,” which should give liberals pause.
