PS, BE, PAN and Livre highlight the defeat of the far right, Chega speaks of the “defeat of Europe”

PS, BE, PAN and Livre stressed this Sunday that the far right had suffered a defeat in the French legislative elections, and Chega considered the result to be a “defeat for Europe”.

In a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the PS secretary general congratulated “the French left and its unity for this outstanding result.”

“The New Popular Front has won the French elections. The far right has suffered a clear defeat. “France deserves better than the alternative between neoliberalism and fascism”, as Olivier Faure, secretary general of @partisocialiste, said,” wrote Pedro Nuno Saints.

The PS General Secretary stated that “by uniting, the left defeated the far right in the elections, now they will have to defeat them in governance and public policy” and believed that “the best barrier against the far right is the protection and deepening of the Social State.”

BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua wrote on the same social network that “the left has defeated the far right.”

“The French people have shown that the choice is not between the neoliberal center and the far right. The victory of the left led by @FranceInsoumise opens the way for a radical social and ecological project. Hope is gaining strength in Europe,” the blocker emphasized.

In turn, the leader of Chega considered that the results of the elections in France represent “a real collapse for Europe.”

“A disaster for the economy, a tragedy in immigration and a bad fight against corruption,” he added in his post on the social network X.

On the same social network, a PAN spokesman noted that “the French people defeated the far right,” declaring that “it was a good day for democracy, which shows that early winners and the victory of social progress should never be declared and the environment should be protected.”

In a statement, Lievre noted that “French voters mobilized and went to the polls in large numbers to avoid the first far-right government since World War II,” but noted that this was “by far the best result for the far right in a French legislative election.”

Livre stressed that now is the “time to act and implement social, ecological and progressive measures that meet the wishes of everyone who lives in France”, considering it necessary to “create a social and ecological republic that is clearly and unmistakably feminist, anti-racist, pro-environmental and progressive”.

The party also stressed that “this result shows that the rapprochement of progressive, environmental and left-wing forces is the best way to fight the far right in parallel and create an alternative governance.”

A left-wing alliance has won the second round of France’s legislative elections, beating President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition and the far right, which emerged as favourites in the polls, according to the first forecasts released after the polls closed.

According to the first published estimates, none of the three blocs will win a majority in the second round of elections.

In the first round on June 30, the National Union (RN, for its French acronym), Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, managed to win its first legislative election, taking 33.1% of the vote and nearly doubling its support since the election of its National Assembly in 2022.

It is followed by the left-wing New Popular Front alliance (which brings together socialists, ecologists and communists and is led by LFI, the radical left party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon) with 28%.

Ensemble (Together), a centrist and liberal grouping led by President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, received 20%.
