It has been a particularly bloody year for journalism, with several active conflicts around the world, and the situation in the Middle East being the most worrisome. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 31 professionals have died this year, 29 of them in the war between Israel and Hamas.
CPJ’s preliminary investigations show that from the time Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, through July 6 of this year, at least 109 journalists and media workers are among the more than 39,000 killed since the war began, making it the deadliest period for industry professionals since the company began collecting data in 1992.
These figures, however, do not include the five Palestinian journalists killed this Saturday in separate Israeli attacks on the Nuseirat refugee camp and the central Gaza town of Deir el-Balah. In fact, the Gaza government says the number of reporters killed since the conflict began could reach 150.
But it’s not only here that journalists risk their lives doing their job. Since the Russian invasion of the country began on February 24, 2022, at least 100 journalists have been attacked by Russian troops in Ukraine, 11 of whom have already died. There are also conflicts in Sudan, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Myanmar, among others.
Also, 67 journalists worldwide have gone missing since the start of the year, the majority (16) in Mexico, according to CPJ. The number of arrests has risen to 320, with China, Myanmar, and Belarus leading the list.
