The demands of the security forces, especially regarding salaries, no matter how fair they may be, cannot jeopardize the collective interests of the country, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro warned this Monday.
Speaking in Figueira da Foz, Coimbra district, to 271 GNR temporary security guards who completed their 54th security guard training course today, Luís Montenegro called for “greater fairness and balance in the pay of women and men serving in the security forces.”
“Our only limitation is to simply combine these efforts with others that are above all else: whoever, like us, has the mission of looking after the welfare of the entire country must have a sense of responsibility not to make any special interests. No matter how legal and fair it may be, it undermines the collective interests of the entire people and the entire nation,” the Prime Minister stressed.
“It is within this framework that the government is working and will continue to work so that your uniform is increasingly respected and so that more and more people may want to wear it,” he emphasized, addressing the new guards of the Polish People’s Republic.
Stressing that without security it is impossible to guarantee the rights, freedoms and guarantees of citizens, as well as the values of democracy, Luis Montenegro addressed the Commander-in-Chief of the PPR, Lieutenant General Ribeiro Veloso, thanking him for his words and noting that he found in them “realism, a sense of responsibility and a sense of commitment” that the government wants to have in relation to the leadership, all agents and guards of the security forces.
In his speech, Ribeiro Veloso said that now is the time to “roll up our sleeves and do more and better” with the means available to the PNP.
The lieutenant general expressed some concern about the small number of women (16 out of 234) who started the 54th GNR Guard Training Course in September 2023, but was pleased that they all completed it.
The Honorary Commissioning Ceremony marks the entry of new Guardsmen into the GNR and takes place several months after the Pledge of Allegiance, which usually takes place during the first part of the course.
