The head of the Civil Chamber of the President of the Republic and the adviser to the head of state on social issues will be heard on the twins’ case at the end of July, the chairman of the commission told Lusa this Monday.
Rui Paulo Sousa announced that Fernando Frutuoso de Melo would be heard on July 23, and Maria João Ruela the following day.
Francisco Andre, former Prime Minister António Costa’s chief of staff at the time of the events, will also testify this week, with a hearing scheduled for July 25.
These are the last three hearings of the parliamentary commission investigating the Portuguese-Brazilian twins case before work is suspended for about a month due to the holidays of the Assembly of the Republic.
The commission’s work will last until July 26 and will resume on September 10.
The case in point is the hospital treatment of two Portuguese-Brazilian children who received the drug Zolgensma, a two-million-euro drug designed to control the spread of spinal muscular atrophy, a neurodegenerative disease.
The case is still under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, but the General Inspectorate of Health has already concluded that these children’s access to neuropaediatric consultation was illegal.
An internal audit of Santa Maria Hospital also concluded that the state Department of Health’s initial hospital admissions schedule was the only exception to compliance in this case.
