The National Council of the PSD approved this Monday the holding of direct meetings of the party leadership on September 6, followed by the Congress from September 21 to 22 in Braga.
The election schedule, proposed by the PSD’s National Political Commission, was approved with one abstention at a meeting of the party’s National Council, the highest body between congresses, a Social Democratic source told Luce.
Current Prime Minister Luis Montenegro will re-apply for a second two-year term as president of the PSD, the party he has led since 2022.
The National Council of the PSD meets in a hotel in Lisbon from approximately 9:30 p.m.
The holding of direct meetings and an elective congress this year is a result of the SDP statute, which establishes that the term of office of the party’s elected bodies is two years, counting their duration from the day of the elections.
Luís Montenegro won the direct elections of 28 May 2022 with 72.5% of the votes, which he contested with Jorge Moreira da Silva, and the current national organs of the party were elected at a congress held from 1 to 3 July of that year in Harbour.
Completing his two-year term as SDP president, he became prime minister, heading a minority executive in coalition with the SDS-PP following snap legislative elections on March 10 this year.
The XXIV Government, headed by Luis Montenegro, who took office on April 2, enjoys the support of 80 deputies – 78 from the PSD and 2 from the SDS-PP – out of 230 in Parliament, in which the PS has 78 seats, Arrives 50, IL 8, BE 5, PCP 4, Livre also 4 and PAN 1.
Due to the European elections on June 9, it was already planned that the next elections and the SDP Congress would take place later, starting in September.
