Chega leader André Ventura said on Tuesday that the prime minister must govern the country and avoid “creating early election scenarios” because otherwise “it would seem that it is the PSD that wants” new legislative elections.
“Dr. Luis Montenegro should be concerned with one thing: governing the state, and not creating scenarios for early elections every day. […] Budget day is coming and we will all be here to assess that day and monitor it,” he said.
Speaking to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, André Ventura believes that “it is not worth threatening elections every day, because this gives the impression that it is the PSD that wants elections.”
The Chegi leader said the prime minister “will step down when he is dismissed by the president of the republic, if a vote of confidence is not approved, if there is a vote of no confidence.”
Ventura noted that “if the budget is not approved, it will be difficult [Montenegro] will remain in office unless he wants to achieve a status different from that of all the prime ministers of recent years” or if he thinks that “he is superhuman and can govern without a budget.”
“It is the Portuguese who will remove him from office whenever they want. The President of the Republic exists, but this parliament will have an important say in governance in the coming months,” he said.
Ventura also said that “the one who escaped all understanding and any majority was not Chega, but Prime Minister Luis Montenegro.”
PSD Chairman and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said on Monday evening that if the PS is playing games over the budget negotiations, then have the courage to topple the government.
Speaking to the National Council of the PSD, open to the media, Luis Montenegro confirmed that the minority leader he leads should cease his functions only if he is overthrown by a vote of no confidence.
