Cavaco takes part in Pedro Nuno’s speech and Montenegro’s tactics

Former President of the Republic and Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva entered into the speech of the PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos on the direction of the country’s economy, as well as into the tactics of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who challenged the opposition to overthrow the government.

In May, Pedro Nuno had already called on Cavaco to defend selective support for strategic areas of the economy. And at the time, he argued that economic transformation did not imply a “reduction of the IRC,” a proposal from the government’s 60-measure package that leaves the PS even further from the viability of the next state budget.

On Tuesday, the socialist once again mentioned Cavaco, believing that the social democrat “must be one of those who was disappointed in the so-called “package” that was presented to the country”, “almost as much” as the PS itself.

Pedro Nuno recalled that Cavaco “recently returned to defending the need for an industrial policy strategy,” in an opinion piece published in the newspaper. To express in which he also proposed holding early legislative elections.

In the article, the former head of state said that there were only two paths in the political system by which “Portugal can take an important step forward” in the next ten years. Either “a government enjoying the support of a majority in the Assembly of the Republic after legislative elections, early or not,” or a minority executive power, provided that “extremist parties” lose “weight” and “regime pacts” are concluded with the opposition.

The Prime Minister, for whom Cavaco is admittedly the “greatest political authority”, began by asserting that he was “not concerned about the duration of the legislature’s mandate”, but this Monday he declared that if the PS is playing a “game” in the negotiations on the 2025 state budget, “therefore have the courage to overthrow the government”.

“This is neither a threat nor a wish,” Montenegro explained, “aware of the damage that a new political crisis could cause the country.” But Pedro Nuno criticized the executive for “threatening early elections,” which is what Cavaco did as prime minister in the 1980s, allowing him to win two absolute majorities.
