The President of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), Portuguese Jorge Viegas, mourned this Wednesday the death of Paulo Pinheiro, director of the Algarve International Circuit (AIA), considering it “a great loss for the country”.
Speaking to Lusa, Jorge Viegas called Paulo Pinheiro “a very important figure for motorsport in Portugal, especially when it comes to international competitions such as MotoGP, Formula 1 or the World Superbike Championship”, championships that he brought to the Algarve Circuit.
“We have been collaborating a lot in recent times to support the Portuguese MotoGP GP and help some Portuguese riders compete in international championships,” explained Jorge Viegas, who heads the world’s top motorcycle organisation.
Viegas admitted that Paulo Pinheiro’s death “came as a big surprise because he was very young and still had a lot to give.”
“This is a great loss for the country because he was such a serious prosecutor,” concluded Jorge Viegas, expressing “his sincere condolences to his family and everyone who worked with him.”
The founder and current president of the board of directors of the Algarve International Circuit (AIA), Paulo Pinheiro, died today at the age of 52, the press service of the Algarve Circuit reported.
“It is with great sadness and horror that the AIA administration announces the death of engineer Paulo Pinheiro, its founder and president of the board of directors,” the statement said.
Paulo Pinheiro became a victim of a lightning-fast cancer disease.
