This Thursday, the government sent to the President of the Republic a decision on the possible publication of a parliamentary decree reducing IRS rates to level 6, which was opposed by the executive parties.
“This is the time of the President of the Republic, we respect him and he will make the decision that he must make at his own discretion. It is not our task to condition,” said the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaru, in a press conference following the Council of Ministers, after being asked whether the executive power would apply the reduction in the IRS provided for in this diploma or, on the contrary, refer to the constitutional norm of the “brake law”.
However, the president’s minister said “this government is cutting taxes” and cited the recent history of political debate around the severity of the tax burden in Portugal.
