Mozambican police opened a case Friday against the son of Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi for causing a traffic accident in which two children were injured in central Maputo, an official source told Luce.
The car driven by Florindo Nyusi collided with another vehicle at around 10am (9am Lisbon time), hitting two children, aged seven and eight, who were trying to cross the road on their way to school on Avenida Julius Nyerere, less than three kilometres from the Mozambican presidential building, a spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo told Luce.
“At the time of the incident we did not have a speedometer at the scene, but we assume that it was excessive speed on the part of citizen Florindo Nyusi’s car due to the state of the two vehicles,” said a PRM spokesman in Maputo, announcing that a case had been opened.
The victims, both of whom were taken to Maputo Central Hospital with injuries, were rescued by a plainclothes police officer who was passing by the scene and also provided assistance to the son of the Mozambican president.
“Citizen Florindo Nyusi was trapped in his car after the accident,” said Leonel Muchina.
One of the children had a brain contusion and was undergoing surgery, while another had a knee injury, a family member at Maputo Central Hospital told Luce.
The source, the child’s aunt, who he said was in serious condition, said the family had opened a criminal case against the son of Mozambique’s head of state.
