The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received today at the Belém Palace with military honours the Princess of Asturias, Leonora de Borbón y Ortiz, heir to the Spanish crown, and awarded her the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ.
“This is a tribute to Your Highness, the Kingdom of Spain, our eternal friendship,” the head of state said. The Military Order of Christ is intended to recognize outstanding services rendered to the country in the exercise of sovereign functions.
The President of the Republic and the Princess went to a closed meeting, followed by a private lunch at 12:30.
The princess also laid a wreath at Camões’ tomb in the Jeronimos Monastery.
At 15:15 they plan a joint visit to the Lisbon Oceanarium.
During her visit to Portugal, the Princess of Asturias is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, José Manuel Albarez.
Princess Leonor landed in Figo Maduro and was received by the Portuguese Ambassador to Spain and the Spanish Ambassador to Portugal.
This is the first official visit of the Princess of Asturias.
