‘Gross and totally unjustifiable violence’: Man jailed for attacking immigrant

The “brutal” and “totally unjustifiable” violence committed against a 51-year-old Brazilian immigrant on June 10 last year in Braga has earned the attacker, Fabio Lemos, an effective prison sentence of four years and four months. The ruling was made on Friday by the Braga court, which decided not to suspend the sentence but applied a papal pardon law that reduces the prison term to three years and four months.

Fabio Lemos must not commit any crimes until the end of September next year and must pay just over €2,000 in compensation to be pardoned. The 30-year-old car salesman has been in prison in Braga since November. He was accused of assaulting Brazilian immigrant Saulo Juca for xenophobic reasons, but the court found the crime inconclusive. Fabio Lemos, who has other convictions for assault and domestic violence, was found guilty of another attack last January. One of the accomplices in that crime was acquitted, while the other was given a suspended sentence of one year.
