Miner Missing in Poland After Earthquake Found Alive

A miner who went missing after an earthquake rocked Poland’s Rydułtowy coal mine has been found alive more than two days after the accident, local authorities said Saturday.

The miner was conscious and was being transported to the surface, according to authorities in the Silesian coal mining region in southern Poland.

The head of Polish Coal Mining Group, which operates the mine, said rescue teams reached the 32-year-old miner early on Saturday and that he was conscious and communicating, despite some breathing problems.

Seventy-eight miners were in the area when a magnitude 3.1 quake struck the mine, which is about 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) underground, on Thursday afternoon.

As a result of the accident, one person died and 17 miners were taken to hospital.

In 2019 and 2020, two miners were killed in separate accidents at the Rydułtowy mine, which opened in 1792 and currently employs about 2,000 people. Some coal mines in Poland are prone to methane explosions.

In Poland, more than 90,000 people work in the declining mining industry, which employed almost 400,000 people in 1990.
