The enrollment of students who will be in the 10th and 12th years next academic year begins this Monday and ends at the end of the week, completing the process of admission to compulsory education, which has been plagued by many problems this year.
The first phase of registration began on April 15, with registration for preschools and the first year of basic education lasting for a month. In June, the remaining enrollment began in stages, which is scheduled to end on July 20 for secondary school students, according to the calendar set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI).
Although the process is step-by-step and registration is only required if a student changes schools, changes a parent, changes a course, or needs to take new subjects, families have faced multiple restrictions due to repeated failures of the registration portal.
Last year, the guardianship decided to create a new platform, but according to MECI, the portal was only tested at the time of registration and there were many days during which access was blocked, which forced the initially defined deadlines to be extended several times.
Early last Wednesday morning, for example, was the last day on the registration calendar for students in years 2 through 5, but parents were unable to sign up due to “technical issues with the data center’s refrigeration equipment,” according to MECI’s office.
These situations prompted the minister to apologise to families and express regret for the inconvenience caused to guardians and schools due to the failures on the registration portal.
At a parliamentary hearing on Wednesday, Minister Fernando Alexandre blamed the previous government for delays in preparing for the school year, citing restrictions on the registration portal and delays in accommodating teachers.
“They were given a poorly functioning platform to create a new one. When we arrived, the platform was being created,” he said, adding that the new “platform was tested on enrolled students.”
