Security forces occupy towns in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro.

Security forces in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will occupy several towns and neighborhoods in the western zone this Monday in an effort to reclaim territory and put an end to disputes between drug dealers and police officers in the region.

In accordance with G1Rio’s western zone has been the target of several territorial disputes between criminals in the last two years. The operation involves 2,000 civilian and military police, and is taking place mainly in the areas of Jacarepaguá, Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, Itanhanga, Vargem Grande and Vargem Pequena.

Agents also use two armored planes that fly over populated areas, as well as drones with facial recognition, as well as 240 vehicles and an armored ambulance.

Authorities are seeking to enforce arrest warrants.

What’s at stake in territorial disputes?

Communities in Rio de Janeiro’s western zone have been in conflict for at least two years. Over time, disputes between criminal groups have resulted in several deaths. Among these groups is Comando Vermelho, which has already organized dozens of attacks in the region and is looking to gain an advantage in studying the sale of gas, Internet packages and even the real estate market.

Currently, there are still four favelas in Jacarepaguá that are frequently targeted by attacks, such as Rio das Pedras, considered the birthplace of the militia.
