The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated Roberta Metsola “very warmly” on Tuesday on her re-election as President of the European Parliament, considering that the “significant votes” she received reflected recognition “for a job well done”.
The President of the European Parliament, Maltese Roberta Metsola, was today reappointed for a term until the beginning of 2027 by a majority of 562 votes out of a total of 720 MEPs and by acclamation.
In a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “warmly congratulates Roberta Metsola on her election in the first round to the post of President of the European Parliament.”
According to the head of state, “the significant number of votes achieved certainly reflects the recognition of his colleagues for his excellent work, his courage, his ability for dialogue and innovation.”
“The President of the Republic wishes every success in this important role that Roberta Metsola is once again called upon to fulfil, for the benefit of European construction, the deepening of the principles and values of democracy, and economic and social progress,” reads the same note.
Roberta Metsola was re-elected at the start of the first plenary session of the European Parliament’s new mandate in the French city of Strasbourg.
His re-candidacy for the post of President of the European Parliament, proposed by the European People’s Party (EPP), received 562 votes in favor and 76 blank and zero votes in the first round of voting.
Running against Metsola was former Spanish Equality Minister Irene Montero, nominated by the European Left Group, a candidate who received 61 votes in favour.
Maltese Roberta Metsola became President of the European Parliament in January 2022 following the death of the institution’s previous leader, David Sassoli.
At that time, she was elected with approximately 458 votes in favor among the then 705 deputies.
