Inflation slowed to 2.5% in the eurozone and 2.6% in the EU in June

The annual inflation rate in the eurozone slowed to 2.5% in June, Eurostat said on Wednesday, confirming its previous estimate and also indicating a decline to 2.6% in the European Union (EU).

In the eurozone countries, the annual inflation rate in June compares with 5.5% year-on-year and 2.6% in May.

Across the 27 Member States as a whole, the rate fell to 2.6% compared to June 2023 (6.4%) and to the annual inflation rate recorded in May (2.7%).

Core inflation (which excludes more volatile items such as energy and unprocessed food) meanwhile slowed to 2.8% in June, down from 6.8% in the same period last year and 2.9% in May.

The lowest inflation rates, measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HIPC, which allows comparisons between countries), were observed in June in Finland (0.5%), Italy (0.9%) and Lithuania (1.0%), while the highest were recorded in Belgium (5.4%), Romania (5.3%), Spain and Hungary (3.6% each).

In Portugal, the rate measured by the HIPC slowed to 3.1%, down from 4.7% in June 2023 and 3.8% recorded in May.

Compared with May, annual inflation fell in 17 Member States, remained unchanged in one and rose in nine others.
