Unions say government has failed to provide proposals to boost nurses’ pay

The proposal to increase nurses’ salaries, presented this Wednesday by the Ministry of Health to the Platform of the Union of Nurses, is classified as a non-offer by the five unions that refused to negotiate and submitted their own proposal.

The president of the Independent Union of All United Nurses (SITEU), Gorete Pimentel, told Lusa that the ministry had presented a minimum proposal, which the unions did not even consider a proposal, but rather a non-proposal, because the document “is not a proposal and is not based on anything.”

Representatives of five nurses’ unions, who were accepted for negotiations today, told the Health Ministry that they were going to pretend that today’s meeting did not take place because what was presented to them was not a proposal, according to the union leader.

He recalled that this is the third government meeting to discuss the size of the remuneration table, emphasizing that the executive branch has not presented anything for negotiations in a row.

This table should be the first subject of negotiations because these professionals need to be valued, Gorete Pimentel said.

Unions are now waiting for a counter-offer at the negotiating table to decide what to do, he said, pointing out that nurses’ pay scales have not been reviewed for more than 15 years.

The “Commitment to the Nurses’ Union” platform brings together, in addition to SITEU, the National Nurses’ Union (SNE), the Nurses’ Union (SE), the Independent Union of Professional Nurses (SIPENF) and the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (SINDEPOR).
