Sao João da Caparica beach and Praia do Norte in the municipality of Almada are closed to swimming due to poor water quality and a red flag has been raised, the municipality said on Wednesday.
A statement from the Almada Municipal Council (CMA) in the district of Setúbal explained that “following analyses carried out over the last 48 hours, the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA) has reported that bathing water at the beaches of S. João da Caparica/Praia do Norte has obtained values exceeding the established limit for the parameter e coli.”
At the moment, according to the municipality, the corresponding warnings have already been posted and red flags have been raised, signaling the closure of water bodies.
In relation to this situation, the Almada Municipal Council states that it is already on site to identify the source of the problem in collaboration with the Municipal Water and Sanitation Service (SMAS), the Coastal Authority (WEMOB), concessionaires and the competent authorities.
Portugal’s Environment Agency will carry out a new analysis on Thursday, with the municipality guaranteeing that it will “continue to monitor the situation and keep the population informed.”
