The Lisbon City Council, after public consultation, approved this Friday a proposal to increase the tourist tax on overnight stays from two to four euros per night, with the intention of coming into force “from September 1st”.
At a closed session of the municipal executive, the PSD/CDS-PP proposal, which has yet to be presented to the municipal assembly, was declared viable thanks to the votes of the PCP against and the votes of the others, namely Supporters, PS, Livre, Citizens for Lisbon (elected by the PS/Livre coalition) and BE, a source in the municipality told Lusa.
The proposal, which has been put out for public consultation for 30 days, remains unchanged in its idea of increasing the tourist tax for overnight stays from two to four euros per guest per night.
The document also provides for an update of the tourist tax for arrivals by sea transport from one to two euros per passenger, although it is currently proposed to update the amount that began to be applied this year, with the start of collecting this tax from cruise passengers.
According to the proposal to which Lusa had access, the council intends to “put into effect the municipal tourist tax for overnight stays from 1 September and the municipal tourist tax for arrivals by sea the day after the publication of the amendment to the Decree in the Republic Diary”.
On 17 April, the municipal executive approved the PSD/CDS-PP proposal to submit these changes to public consultation, with the PCP abstaining and the rest of the council voting in favour.
