Spain arrests suspects in pro-Russian cyberattacks on countries that supported Ukraine

Spanish police announced on Saturday the arrest of three people accused of participating in computer attacks by a pro-Russian group on government institutions and strategic sectors in Spain and other NATO countries.

The attacks targeted countries that supported Ukraine in its fight against Russian invasion.

According to a Civil Guard source, two suspects were detained in Huelva and Seville in southern Spain, and a third in the Balearic Islands.

They were arrested for “computer crimes with terrorist intent” after a series of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which make websites or network resources unavailable by flooding them with malicious traffic.

“The attacks were directed against government institutions and companies in strategic sectors of countries that support Ukraine,” he added.

According to police, the group’s main activity was to organize attacks using “its own software called DDoSia, which can be used by individuals supporting its goals.”

Citing the NoName manifesto, the police statement said the hacker group’s mission was to respond to “hostile and openly anti-Russian actions by Western Russophobes.”

In mid-June, Swiss government websites were hit by a wave of DDoS attacks ahead of a summit aimed at seeking peace in Ukraine, an operation claimed by NoName057(16).

The attacks targeted addresses of the federal government and organizations participating in the peace summit, the Swiss leader said at the time.
