The mandate is extended until 2029. “Europe cannot control dictators and demagogues around the world, but it can choose to protect its own democracy. Europe cannot determine elections around the world, but it can invest in the security and protection of this continent.
“Europe cannot stop change, but it can embrace it and invest in a new era of prosperity and improved quality of life,” Von der Leyen said in her speech before the vote.
As the world grapples with climate change, Von der Leyen has made it clear that the environment will be part of her agenda.
“In recent years, we have concluded 35 new agreements with global partners on clean technologies, hydrogen and essential raw materials. (…) “I will present a new pact on clean industry in the first 100 days of my mandate,” he promised, stressing that “Europe is simultaneously decarbonising and industrialising.”
In the end, he left a guarantee: “Civil society must be more supported and protected.”
Joe Biden Sends a Message
Biden congratulates von der Leyen: ‘I look forward to working with you, the President of the European Council’ [António] Costa and the President of the European Parliament [Roberta] Metsola, as we build on our strong partnerships and face shared global challenges.”
Agriculture
Von der Leyen did not forget agriculture. He guaranteed farmers a “fair income” and promised “smarter incentives and innovation.”
Interlocutor of the European Parliament
The European Commission is the EU institution that has a monopoly on legislative initiative, along with important executive powers in areas such as competition and foreign trade. It is the highest executive body of the European Union, consisting of a college of Commissioners, one Commissioner from each Member State.
The Commission supervises the application of Union law and compliance with the Treaties by Member States. It also chairs the committees responsible for implementing European Union law. The previous system of “comitology” has been replaced by new legal instruments, in particular implementing and delegated acts. The European Commission is the main interlocutor of the European Parliament on legislative and budgetary matters.
