Portugal won two honorary awards at the eighth European Physics Olympiad, which took place from 14 to 19 July in Georgia, the Portuguese Physics Society (SPF) said in a statement today.
Students Ivan Pinto from Escola Secundária de Fafe and Pedro Silva from Escola Secundária Domingos Rebelo in Ponta Delgada in the Azores were awarded honorary prizes.
This year’s European Physics Olympiad was attended by around 250 secondary school students from 54 countries.
The tests took place at the International University of Kutaisi and included solving theoretical problems, namely, limited relativity and physical optics, as well as conducting an experiment on the piezoelectric effect – a phenomenon that occurs when force is applied to a crystal with special properties that creates a high difference in electrical potentials.”
“The level of knowledge required to carry out these tests goes far beyond the average physics curriculum, requiring enormous effort and dedication from the students during the preparation phase,” said Rui Travasso, a professor at the University of Coimbra who trained the Portuguese team, as quoted in the statement.
In Portugal, the Physics Olympiads are organized by SPF with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation and the University of Coimbra.
