Take cover. The entire country is at very high risk of exposure to UV radiation.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), all areas of mainland Portugal, as well as the Madeira and Azores archipelagos, are currently at very high risk of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV).

Mainland Portugal and the Azores archipelago will be at very high risk of UV exposure until at least Thursday.

The Madeira archipelago will be at high risk today, while on Wednesday Funchal will be at extreme risk and Porto Santo will be at very high risk.

On Thursday, Funchal remains at extreme level, while Porto Santo remains in the high risk zone.

The UV radiation scale has five levels, ranging from extreme to low risk.

In high-risk areas, IPMA recommends avoiding sun exposure as much as possible.

For very high-risk areas, IPMA advises the use of sunglasses with UV filter, a hat, a T-shirt, an umbrella, sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure for children.
