Wine production will reach 7.4 million hectolitres in 2023, the highest level since 2001.

Wine production in Portugal will reach 7.4 million hectolitres in 2023, the highest result since 2001, INE reported today in the field of agricultural statistics.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), wine production has increased in almost all regions of the country, with wines typically having a “complex structure and balance between alcohol, acidity and tannins.”

The published data also shows that the self-sufficiency rate for wine in the 2022/2023 campaign was 108.9%, down from 112.4% recorded in 2021/2022.

Wine production fell by 6.9% compared to the previous campaign, compounded by a 20.2% drop in imports.

Wine consumption fell by 9.2%, “especially for wines without certification,” the national statistics office said.

The beverage industry will generate €3.7 billion in sales in 2023, up €166 million from 2022, with the “wine industry” accounting for 49.5% of total sales value (51.9% in 2022).
