Interior Minister Margarida Blasco today highlighted the role of the Portuguese security forces mobilised to reinforce security measures for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, calling them “Portugal’s ambassadors abroad”.
In her speech during the delivery of the police equipment of the Portuguese contingent that will be sent to assist the French security forces between July 26 and August 11, Margarida Blasco stressed that this support is an example of the “use of resources in cross-border areas or operations and joint patrol actions” of the Portuguese police.
The equipment was handed over on Tuesday to 53 Public Security Police (PSP) officers who will be present at the next Olympic and Paralympic Games at a ceremony at the Escola da Guarda in Queluz, Lisbon.
The minister expressed “words of appreciation and confidence” to the police, praising their “thorough and thorough preparation” coupled with “availability, a spirit of sacrifice and a clear desire to serve well.”
“I am convinced that the experience and the careful and rigorous preparation, coupled with your readiness, the spirit of sacrifice and the obvious desire to serve well that you have taught us, allow us to have justified confidence in the success of this mission, in which I am sure that you will be true ambassadors of Portugal abroad. I wish you good luck, great success and a safe return,” he added.
Portugal will send 54 National Republican Guard (GNR) soldiers and 53 Public Security Police (PSP) agents to reinforce security measures at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
The national contingent will include teams specialising in kinesthetics (police and dog teams) and bomb disposal, as well as police officers specialising in patrolling and public transport security, among other PSP skills.
At the same ceremony, the Republican National Guard (GNR) received 26 new vehicles for nature and environmental protection operations, which Margarida Blasco expressed confidence that they would contribute to the “prevention, surveillance and detection of rural fires.”
“This is a formula for increasing the combat capability and response capacity of our forces. In short, this is the path to strengthening internal security,” the minister concluded.
