The National Federation of Education (FNE) reported that hundreds of teachers had been placed in schools where there were no vacancies. “The management informed them that they did not have a teaching component,” it said, stressing that these teachers would have to apply for internal mobility. Education Minister Fernando Alexandre confirmed to the newspaper Público that there were “six thousand vacancies added by the previous government” without “justification for it.” João Costa, a former minister, acknowledged that this competition was different from others because “it took into account the real needs of schools over several years.”
Teachers who are in principle retiring, those with a “history of long absences” and those who annually hold coordinating, tutoring, project and other positions were taken into account. Costa guarantees that if these teachers do not already have zero hours, the school year will begin with a “much smaller shortage of teachers”. João Luceiro (Fenprof) praised the opening of vacancies and guarantees that the number of teachers will be “minimal” and that there will be no teaching component in September.
