The National Teachers’ Federation (Fenprof) warned the government on Thursday of the need to create “minimally decent housing” for teachers, without forcing them “to live in the countryside, in rooms, barracks or seclusion rooms.”
Mário Nogueira responded to the news from Radio Renascensa, which reported this Thursday that the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) is contacting dioceses, local authorities, civil society institutions and the military to find affordable housing for teachers away from home.
“We hope that if teachers are put in barracks, they will not be forced to pay anything,” Mario Nogueira told reporters at the end of a meeting at MECI to discuss a plan to reduce the number of students not attending classes.
“There are many places of privacy in Fatima, there are barracks that are not used, but we are talking about teachers who have the right to a minimum of decent housing. Rooms,” the union leader criticized.
The Fenprof Secretary General welcomes the work being done to find a solution for the thousands of displaced teachers, but does not forget that “teachers, like everyone else, have the right to decent housing.”
High rents are cited as one reason why teachers are reluctant to take up placements in schools away from home, particularly in the Lisbon and Algarve regions, which are believed to have the highest number of students absent from classes due to a shortage of teachers.
