The PSP launched an investigation into a speech at a meeting of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly held on Tuesday afternoon after a request to intervene due to “the situation of injuries and unrest among municipal deputies,” police said.
“In order to fully clarify the circumstances of the activities of the PSP during the session of the Municipal Assembly, an investigation was appointed,” the Lisbon PSP Metropolitan Command said in a note.
As Lusa noted on the spot, at around 4:45 p.m., two Public Security Police (PSP) agents entered the meeting room at Forum Lisbon and left moments later, accompanied by Chega municipal deputy Bruno Mascarenhas. .
At the time, MPs wondered what was going on, and the chairman of the Municipal Assembly of Lisbon (AML), Rosário Farmhouse (PS), interrupted work to clarify the situation.
Minutes later, the Chega MP re-entered the room and told Luza that he had called the PSP to file a “complaint” against the independent MP elected by the PS/Livre coalition, Miguel Graça, who had accused him of racist and xenophobic meddling. .
In a note sent later, the PSP clarifies that at 18:36 a telephone call was received at the 18th police station asking for “police intervention in connection with injuries and disturbances among municipal deputies at the premises located at Avenida de Roma, 14 Lisbon” .
Subject to the request, a patrol car was called to “investigate the alleged situation”, and once there, “at the request of the alleged participant, who was outside, the police entered the auditorium to contact the alleged victim, where it was later determined that the Lisbon Municipal Assembly was in session ”, adds the PSP.
Also, according to PSP, after the actions inside the auditorium were completed, the agents “completed gathering information about the incident and identifying the alleged victim.”
The complaint filed by Bruno Mascarenhas against MP Miguel Graça comes after the MP for Chega welcomed the news that the decision to build a mosque in Martim Moniz would be reconsidered.
“The council realized that it was really dangerous for the city to have a radical Islam issue there,” he said, believing it was one thing to welcome those who visit the city and another to defend ghetto politics. because multiculturalism is nothing more than a defense of ghetto politics.”
Subsequently, in a question at the table, MP Miguel Graça considered Chega’s intervention a “racist and xenophobic statement”, warning that “racism is a crime in Portugal” and asking that an excerpt from the minutes involving Bruno Mascarenhas be sent to the Commission for Equality and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR).
Approximately 15 minutes after the break, the meeting was resumed, with the Rosario farmhouse explaining that it was deputy Bruno Mascarenhas who called the PSP to file a complaint and “the police accidentally entered the municipal assembly and interrupted work.”
“I already had the opportunity to talk to two PSP agents to clarify that this could not be, this could not be,” said the chairman of the meeting, adding that the police entered “accompanied by an assistant from Chega.”
After this information, since only the chairman of the assembly has the right to convene the PSP, the municipal groups SDP, PS, BE, Livre, PKP, Alliance, Liberal Initiative, MPT, CDS-PP and PAN protested against the position of MP Chega, considering it “inadmissible” and constituting a “violation of the principles of democracy” and calling into question the security of this body, which is the responsibility of the municipal police.
“What happened here today should not have happened. What happened here today cannot happen again. The people of Lisbon voted for us because they believe that we are able to change Lisbon for the better, and not do these sad numbers that we did, everything, everyone in their own way […]all of us, as a result of an event that should not have happened, ended up causing a whole revolt here, ”the chairman of the assembly concluded, apologizing to the residents of Lisbon for the moment that“ embarrassing ”.
Rosário Farmhouse said that an investigation into the incident would be carried out by the assembly’s legal services.
