Chega’s president said Friday that the government made the “right” decision to implement the new income tax tables this year to reduce IRS, expressing himself “happy that Chega contributed” to the decision.
Speaking to reporters at the entrance to the 18th National Council of Chega in Lisbon, André Ventura stressed that “Chega needed to put such enormous pressure on the government so that the government could take the decision that seemed obvious” to apply the new income tax tables.
“The government has carried out what the parliament decided legally, because it is a financial issue. And so it is in this sense that I note that it was the right decision, and I am glad that Chega contributed to making this decision a reality in September for the majority of Portuguese,” he added.
Andre Ventura also said he did not regret this morning’s press conference, in which he pressured the government to implement the new income tax tables in August.
On whether the measures for the armed forces presented at the Council of Ministers today brought Çega closer to the government in the budget negotiations, the Çega leader also stated that “there is still a long way to go” and that “the government already knows. What are Çega’s priorities?
“It was clear from day one, we approach this issue and conduct negotiations frankly, openly and hope for concrete and significant steps,” he said.
Ventura explained that “if there is this frankness, if there is this loyalty and if there is this good faith on the part of the government,” then there is “a way forward,” but that the party today is “no closer or further from approving the budget.”
The Government will approve new income tax tables that will reflect the reduction in IRS rates, following the publication of the diploma of the President of the Republic, which will come into force in September and will have retroactive effect.
“Following the promulgation of the Decree of the President of the Republic AR No. 7/XVI, which modifies the IRS rate table, the government will approve new income tax tables that will reflect the reduction in IRS rates,” the Ministry of Finance indicated in a statement sent today.
Earlier in the afternoon, President Chegi asked the government – even before the executive’s statement – to introduce new IRS tax withholding tables by August and accused the prime minister of wanting to “create confusion” on the issue by bringing it up in the October budget talks.
