The opening of the National Theatre D. Maria II (TNDMII) in Lisbon, closed since early 2023 for renovation work, has been postponed again by a year due to delays in the project and is not expected to reopen to the public until early 2026. According to the board of directors of the theatre, in a statement sent yesterday to Lusa, “the complexity of a work of this magnitude in a historic building classified as a national monument carries the risk of unforeseen events and additional work.”
TNDMII, located in Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio), is undergoing a “deep intervention that includes the refurbishment and restoration of several parts of the building, including public, technical and backstage spaces.” The building closed at the beginning of 2023 for refurbishment works as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). It was initially expected to reopen a year later. But in November 2023, the date was postponed to early 2025.
