Fires Devastate Canadian Tourist Town of Jasper

Much of the tourist town of Jasper in the Canadian province of Alberta was devastated by a massive fire that reduced almost everything to ashes. Flames reached heights of more than 120 meters. About 10,000 residents and more than 25,000 tourists were evacuated from the town, forced to leave everything for safety reasons.

“The magic is not lost and will never be lost. The Alberta government will provide families and communities with the support they need to rebuild and strengthen so that future generations can continue to live in this unique community.”

The gravity of the situation has prompted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to authorize the deployment of military personnel to Alberta to help battle the more than 150 fires that continue to burn in that region alone. Western Canada is experiencing temperatures in the mid-20s and there are more than 900 active wildfires, with about 400 out of control. Jasper is located in the Rocky Mountains, and Jasper National Park, one of Canada’s natural gems, spans over 11,000 square kilometers and attracts thousands of tourists each year. Last year alone, the region attracted about 2.5 million visitors.
