MP from Chega summons PSP to Lisbon Municipal Assembly after being accused of xenophobia

Chega’s MP in Lisbon’s municipal assembly, Bruno Mascarenhas, called the police to a meeting of the body on Tuesday and filed a complaint against PS/Livre’s independent MP Miguel Graço, who accused him of racism and xenophobia.

At the time, the deputies wondered what was going on and the President of the Municipal Assembly of Lisbon (AML) Rosário Farmhouse (PS) decided to stop the work to clarify the situation.

A few minutes later, the deputy for Chega re-entered the room and told Luza that he called the PSP to file a “complaint” against the deputy Miguel Graça, who accused him of racist and xenophobic meddling.

Previously, Bruno Mascarenhas welcomed the news that the decision to build a mosque in Martim Moniz would be rethought: “The Council realized that it is indeed a danger to the city that there is a question of radical Islam.”

“It’s one thing to greet those who come here, it’s another thing to defend ghetto politics, because multiculturalism is nothing more than defending ghetto politics,” Chega’s MP said.

Responding to questions at the table, MP Miguel Graça considered that Chega’s intervention was a “racist and xenophobic statement”, warning that “racism is a crime in Portugal” and requesting that an extract from the minutes of Bruno Mascarenhas’ speech be forwarded to the Equality Commission. and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR).

In response to Chega’s deputy, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas (SDP) said it was important to “look at the mistakes of history”, citing that World War II “began with the war of the Nazi Party against what was multicultural” and given that “this fight against what is multicultural is always a source of war, and multiculturalism is the foundation of everything in society”, including innovation and development.

Approximately 15 minutes after the break, the meeting was resumed, with the president of the Rosario Farmhouse explaining that it was deputy Bruno Mascarenhas who called the PSP to file a complaint and “the police accidentally entered the municipal meeting and interrupted work.”

“I already had the opportunity to talk to two PSP agents to clarify that this could not be, this could not be,” said the chairman of the meeting, adding that the police entered “accompanied by an assistant from Chega.”

After this information, since only the chairman of the assembly has the right to convene the PSP, the municipal groups SDP, PS, BE, Livre, PKP, Alliance, Liberal Initiative, MPT, CDS-PP and PAN protested against the position of MP Chega, considering it “inadmissible” and constituting a “violation of the principles of democracy” and calling into question the security of this body, which is the responsibility of the municipal police.
