The Auto Sueco company, located on Rua Manuel Pinto de Azevedo in Porto, was “totally destroyed” by a fire that broke out in the car dealership on Monday.
The alarm was raised at 1:42 p.m. and 147 firefighters and sappers from Porto fought the fire, supported by 52 vehicles and INEM.
Auto Sueco, a representative of Volvo and other brands, was “completely destroyed,” according to Civil Protection Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Marquez.
The fire has been extinguished, no casualties have been reported, but work may continue for several more hours. Carlos Marquez also claims that the fire started in the offices and spread to other premises. The security perimeter remains in place.
People were splashing water on nearby buildings to prevent the fire from spreading. Explosions were heard and the fire could be seen from the center of Porto.
Rua Manuel Pinto de Azevedo and Avenida AEP in the south-north direction were closed to traffic.
A source from Porto Firefighters Sapadores told Lusa that they still have no information on casualties, the number of people evacuated from the building, or the cause of the fire.
According to the municipal police, Porto firefighters, Portuense volunteer firefighters and the São Mamede de Infesta volunteer firefighting unit (Matosinhos) are at the scene.
“For now, the operatives’ objective is to contain the fire only on the perimeter of Auto Sueco,” the Porto City Council said in a note, in a battle that is being hampered by “the wind blowing from the south,” according to the Zapadors.
